A Sabbath Reminder

A Sabbath Reminder
“The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath.” -Mark 2:27

I attended the 30th Stated Meeting of the Gulf South Presbytery in Pascagoula, Mississippi on Friday. We had a great deal of business to conduct, but we managed to get it all done in one day instead of our usual two. After the meeting, we ate dinner and then reconvened for worship. The worship service at Presbytery is always especially sweet to me because it’s so rare that I get to simply participate in worship instead of leading it. The signing, prayer, and preaching in that worship service truly restored my soul.

Because we got all of our business done in one day, I got an unexpected day off on Saturday. I was able to spend time with my family, work in the yard, and even take a nap that afternoon. That time off restored my body and my mind. Best of all, those times of refreshing and restoration enabled me to lead worship on Sunday from a place of joy and energy.

Why am I telling you all this? Because like all of you – I forget how important resting is. I forget that the Sabbath was made for men like me. I forget that rest is not a luxury – it’s a commandment.

So consider this short article a reminder to rest. Observe the Sabbath. Let the Lord restore you – body, mind, and soul. You’ll be glad you did.

Your Pastor and Friend,
John Knox Foster
