Faithful

Faithful
“Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for He who promised is faithful.” - Hebrews 10:23

Many years ago, Glen and Tampa Sykora’s son Landon was in my second-grade class. I was talking to the kids during Bible about the faith of Abraham. Landon happened to be sitting nearby, so I said, “Landon, go on out the door and just start walking. I’ll tell you when you get where I want you to go.” So Landon got up and headed for the door. I called him back of course, because this particular classroom had a door that actually opened to the outside, and that’s where he was headed. I was struck by the utter trust that he really did have in me as his teacher. But it was a perfect example, because Abraham’s faith was just like that.

Over and over again in the Bible, we have stories of people whose trust in God was so profound that they threw caution, convention, and even what most people think of as common sense right out the window. They did what God was calling them to do. Now, I doubt that most of them did any of this without considerable trepidation, but they did do it. When I think of all of those heroes, now in the great cloud of witnesses, I feel as if my own faith is pretty weak. I panic if the money runs short, freak out if something breaks, come a little unglued if plans don’t work out, and in general rely far too much on my own human plans and far too little on Almighty God.

So in this time in our church, when it is really easy to let doubt creep in and try to take matters into our own hands, I challenge myself and all of you to be in constant prayer and seeking; to strive to trust more deeply and believe more strongly that the God of the universe is truly sovereign and truly good. I wrote a bit last week about some of the ways in which we at CPC have learned that to be true, but I don’t think we can be reminded too often that we serve a God who is faithful even when we are not.

Abraham had no idea where he was going, but God said go, so he started walkin’. Let’s be like Abraham and the rest. Build a boat in the desert, with nary a cloud in the sky. Stand in front of a giant with nothing but a rock and a crude weapon. Call fire from heaven, step out onto the waves, sing praises in prison. And whatever comes next, be ready to follow the call of the one who knows everything and plans only for our good.

Peace.
Jackie
